The presiding judge of the Superior Court of Solano County is looking for volunteers to serve on the court’s Grand Jury.
E. Bradley Nelson said the openings are for the 2014-15 Civil Grand Jury, though those chosen have the potential to serve a subsequent term.
Candidates must be Solano County residents who have lived in the county for at least a year, be United States citizens and be at least 18.
The Civil Grand Jury is part of the judicial branch of the government. Nelson described it as an “arm of the Superior Court.”
The panel is the county’s investigatory body, able to examine all aspects of county and city government, special districts and school districts to make sure that they are serving the best interests of Solano County residents.
In addition, the Grand Jury also looks into citizen complaints that raise suspicions of governmental misconduct.
Grand Jury service can be 20 to 25 hours each week, said Cheryl Clower, administrative assistant to the panel.
The term begins July 1 and continues through a year to June 30, 2015. Jurors may serve two consecutive one-year terms.
Those interested in applying may contact Clower at the Office of the Grand Jury, 707-435-2575, or visit the court website, www.solano.courts.ca.gov, to obtain an application online. Applications must be received no later than May. Applicants will be notified by mail of the Grand Jury orientation that will be scheduled after their submission.
