A proposal to reduce the hours that construction of any type can take place in Benicia’s residential areas will be given a public airing in June, Suzanne Thorsen, Benicia associate planner, said.
Currently, construction in residential zones or within 500 feet of a residential zone is allowed from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week, hours Thorsen said “are unusually long compared to most cities, and can lead to disturbance of residential neighbors at times when they can reasonably expect to be free from loud construction noises.”
The proposed change would limit construction in residential zones or in the downtown commercial district to between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. weekends, she said.
Benicia City Council suggested the changes during its March 3 meeting, Thorsen said.
Information about the ordinance amendment will be posted on the city website, www.ci.benicia.ca.us, on the Building Division page.
Those interested in speaking on the matter may attend the Planning Commission meeting at 7 p.m. June 11 in the Council Chamber of City Hall, 250 East L St. Comments may be submitted to Thorsen by email at sthorsen@ci.benicia.ca.us, or by phone at 707-746-4279.
