■ Nonprofit, city board plan barbecue fundraiser

Those with a longing for homestyle-cooked barbecued meals can sate their hunger and help unfortunate Benicia neighbors at the same time, Anne Cardwell, assistant city manager, said.

Once again, the Benicia Human Services Board and the Benicia Community Action Council are collaborating on a March 8 fundraiser in which CAC cooks will prepare lunches and dinners of barbecued chicken and ribs accompanied by multiple side dishes, including dessert.

“This is a great opportunity to get your friends, neighbors and family together to enjoy a wonderful home-cooked meal, and at the same time help those in need in our community,” said Sharon Petrellese, vice chairperson of the Human Services Board.

Viola Robertson, CAC executive director, said the cost of the barbecue chicken dinners is $14 per person. Barbecue rib dinners will be $15, and a combination of the two is $16.

Each dinner is accompanied by sides of potato salad, greens, baked beans, cornbread and dessert, all prepared at the CAC.

Proceeds will benefit both the Human Services Board and the CAC, both of which help Benicians who either have low incomes or are going through difficult times.

Orders must be placed by Friday, the cutoff date. Each dinner must be ordered and paid for in advance, Cardwell said.

Petrellese is accepting orders, and can be reached at 707-246-4288.

Meals will be available from noon to 5 p.m. March 8. They may be picked up at the Benicia Community Action Council office, 480 Military East, or delivered anywhere in Benicia’s city limits, Cardwell said.
