Natasha Curtis, owner of Zeppelin Comics, has been looking forward to seeing Wonder Woman on the big screen since the ’80s. Curtis grew up on reruns of the Lynda Carter “Wonder Woman” TV show from the ’70s and even had the Wonder Woman underoos as a child.
The comic store owner along with legions of fans will see their childhood dreams come true as “Wonder Woman” arrives to theaters.
“Wonder Woman” stars Gal Gadot as Diana, princess of the Amazons. Diana, growing on a secluded island inhabited only by women, has her world changed when American pilot Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine, crash lands on her home. Trevor tells the Amazons of the outside world’s conflict after being nursed to health. Deciding she can stop this strife, Diana disobeys her mother’s commands and joins Trevor to fight alongside men during World War I. Connie Nielsen and David Thewlis also star as Queen Hippolyta and Sir Patrick Morgan, a person who might be closer to Diana than she thinks.
Curtis said she was excited to see “Wonder Woman”, but was cautiously optimistic, given critics’ reviews of recent movies based on DC Comics properties. These DC movies, like “Suicide Squad and “Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” have gotten rotten scores on Rotten Tomatoes. “Wonder Woman” will be the first “fresh” reviewed film of the bunch. Curtis says one of the best parts of “Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice” was when Wonder Woman made an appearance.
“I really think she shined in that,” Curtis said. “’Batman v Superman’ wasn’t my favorite movie. I think they did a good job teasing her in that movie, and it definitely made me want to see more. I think from the reaction of everybody getting excited about the movie made me say ‘OK, maybe they are going in the right direction this time.’”
Curtis went to see “Wonder Woman” with her husband, son and daughter at a midnight screening Thursday. She said the whole family, even her 13-year-old son, loved the film.
“As far as a perfect movie, I don’t think so,” she said. “There are some effects that could have better. I think they did a really good job of making the movie really entertaining. I think it’s more of a serious movie, but it’s not dark, which I appreciated. I think Gal Gadot did a really good job embodying Wonder Woman.”
Michael Stokes, a patron of Zeppelin Comics, had not seen “Wonder Woman” yet by Thursday afternoon, but he said he’s very excited about the movie and had plans to see it on Saturday saturday.
“It’s kind of cool seeing that Hollywood is actually bring her out to the big screens,” Stokes said. “I think there’s an wonderful actress playing her. I’m excited to see that and a little bit more of where she comes from and leading up the whole Justice League.”
For those that see “Wonder Woman” and are more interested in the character, Curtis says Zeppelin Comics and herself can recommend stories about the character.
“I think this movie will appeal to a wide audience,” she said. “ I know that there’s a lot of concern about being female-centered or male-centered movies. I really feel like this movie doesn’t hang its hat on ‘she’s a female hero.’ She’s just a hero.”
“Wonder Woman” is now playing in Bay Area theaters.
