Benicia police are asking residents to help them solve two incidents involving gunfire that occurred four days apart, Lt. Mike Daley said Wednesday.
The first report was of shots fired on the 400 block of East L Street about 8:10 p.m. on June 29, Daley said.
Police arriving at the site were told a man had been shooting at two other men. Officers found two spent casings but not the shooter or the two men who may have been his targets.
“We had witnesses who verified that one white male subject shot at least twice at two black male subjects, who were running away from him,” Daley said. However, none could identify any of the three.
One witness, though, told police that the two men who had been shot at ran across Military East and jumped into a late-model black Nissan Sentra with a rear spoiler. Daley said the car was spotted leaving East Fifth Street and entering East I-780.
“The shooter may have fled in a truck, but no further description was available,” Daley said. “We’re hoping that someone can call us and provide information.”
The second shooting occurred about 11:35 p.m. on July 3 outside an apartment complex on the 1500 block of East Fourth Street, where police were told someone had fired rounds into an apartment, Daley said. Police arrived to find a large party in and around one of the apartments, and officers described most of the partygoers as intoxicated.
“In this case, it appears as though an argument took place between one of the tenants in the apartment and someone who was asked to leave the party,” he said.
The unwanted guest returned with three or four companions, Daley said, “and at some point, he allegedly shot three or four rounds from the stairway area up toward the second-floor apartment.”
Benicia officers and detectives have interviewed many individuals and have developed a person of interest, but still need information they hope the public can provide, Daley said. “We need others who may have information about this shooting to come forward.”
Those with information about either incident may call Benicia Police Detective Kevin Rose at 707-746-4252 or CRIME STOPPERS at 707-644-STOP (7687). “CRIME STOPPERS offers rewards for information in cases such as these,” Daley said.
