Solano County and other residents can get their vehicles’ child safety seats examined by California Highway Patrol officers at no charge this week during Child Passenger Safety Week.
Officer Daniel Hill, spokesperson for the CHP’s Golden Gate Division, said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has dedicated this week through Saturday to the goal of ensuring the safety of young riders.
“The California Highway Patrol places the highest priority on keeping our children safe,” Hill said. “Vehicle collisions are the leading cause of death of children aged 1 through 13.”
He said in 2012, more than 121,000 children were hurt in crashes. “In that same year, car seats were found to have saved an estimated 284 lives,” he added.
But another 58 could have been saved if they had been property restrained in car seats, he said.
Hill said parents and guardians can have their safety seats inspected by appointment any time during business hours, but this week some CHP offices will offer passenger seat examinations on a first come, first served basis.
No appointment is required for the Golden Gate Division examinations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in an event at which members of both Vallejo police and Vallejo fire departments will participate.
The checkups will take place at Costco Vallejo, 198 Plaza Drive, Vallejo. Those interested may visit the website http://www.chp.ca.gov/offices/ggoffices/301_areaoffices.html.
