Change to middle school roof project hikes cost by more than $20K

February 4, 2015 by Keri Luiz Leave a Comment

Mitchell Stark, Benicia Unified School District bond director, will ask school board trustees on Thursday to consider and approve a final change order for the Benicia Middle School roof project that increases the cost of the project by more than $20,000.

The board awarded the $581,415 contract for the middle school roof project on June 19, 2014 to Go Green Inc. The contract includes a 20-year warranty from the materials manufacturer, Metracrylics, along with a two-year contractor warranty.

Stark wrote in a report to the board that during the course of construction several unforeseen conditions arose that required additional work by the contractors, including installing materials to provide a better slope to the existing roof surface for water flow to the gutter and draining systems, ventilation screens at rebuilt soffits, new metal coping and patching of stucco because of water intrusion.

The final revised contract price is now $605,815.77, an increase of $24,400.77, or 4 percent to the original contract value, Stark wrote. The funds will come from the Measure S bond funding.

In other business, Superintendent Janice Adams will ask the board for approval of a plan to share 50 percent of the staffing cost for two School Resource Officer (SRO) positions beginning in fiscal year 2015-16.

“School Resource Officers have served the Benicia Unified School District since 1993,” Adams wrote in a report to trustees. “During these years the School Resource Officers have provided invaluable service to the students and staff of BUSD.”

SROs provide support for Benicia High School, Liberty High School, Benicia Middle School and DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) training at the four elementary schools, she wrote. Among their duties as outlined in supplemental information provided to the board for Thursday’s meeting is participating in student counseling sessions and parent conferences and deterring criminal activity and disruptive behavior during school hours.

To split the cost of the two SROs with Benicia Police Department would require approximately $150,000 annually from the school district, Adams wrote. The agreement would be for two years beginning July 1 and lasting through June 30, 2017.

If you go:
Trustees will meet in a closed session at 6 p.m., and in open session at 7 p.m. in the BUSD board room, 350 East K St.
