BENICIA — Next year will mark the 160th anniversary of the founding of the Pony Express on April 3 of 1860. To commemorate this important occasion, the Benicia State Parks Association is sponsoring an historic lecture and presentation at the Benicia State Capitol on Sunday, April 14, 2019 from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. (please note the later starting time).
Steve Beck, an historic interpretive specialist for over two decades at Sutter’s Fort SHP, will present this informative talk. Steve is an expert in his field and has delivered a number of other presentations at the Benicia Capitol which attendees have found to be not only historically interesting but also quite entertaining.
The Pony Express ceased operating on October 26, 1861 but played a vital role at a time when California was becoming a powerful and influential part of American life. Benicia had been the state’s Capital just a few short years before and remained a critical transportation hub during this time period.
A monument to the Pony Express can be found at the bottom of First Street here in Benicia. Cost for the event is $5.00 for adults (collected at the door) and will include light refreshments.
Toni Haughey, President of the Benicia State Parks Association and Jon Van Landschoot, Senior Park Aide are pleased to bring another historical presentation to the Benicia Capitol for all to enjoy.
