Looking out the kitchen window, I see the autumn moon setting large and full over western hills. It is 6am and still dark, except for one streetlight in front of the house- how it glows and pretends to be another moon. Johanna Ely is Benicia’s poet laureate.
Poetry Corner: Bud Light “A Parting Wish and a Fond Goodbye”
Like the tall men of fortune Who gained strength from yesterday’s goodbye Sol would always stand beside the gates of time Waiting for tomorrow’s first hello. Even as each new warmth began to fade, Beyond the hills of fear and despair, He ran as close to the edge of love As his tired dreams would […]
The A Cappella Handyman: Writer’s Tuesday
Writer’s Tuesday Suppose I did this for a living, could I keep up the pace? Or would I shrink into a mis-shaped curl, laptop open on my chest, supported by my knees, feet down upon my recliner, footrest up, tethered to the juice in the wall by the white wire lifeline keeping my batteries up? […]
Jeff Burkhart’s “Rhyme and Reason”: Faith
When you’re in a hurricane And winds begin to blow And homes fill up with pouring rain And there’s nowhere to go You go up in the attic Then you go up on the roof And then a fishing boat arrives GOD MADE LOVE WATERPROOF ! Jeff Burkhart’s “Rhyme and Reason” © Copyright, August, 2017 […]
Poetry Corner: Bud Light “Don’t Look at Me”
Little child, please don’t look at me with hunger in your eye For I feel it gnawing at my brain you make my soul to cry Lonesome old woman I see myself reflected in the vacant pools of the rejected. Turn away from me you cause my heart to sigh Crippled young man, do not […]
Poetry Corner: James Garrett “Hands”
Hands so gentle yet so strong. Hands I’ve held and known so long. Hands cooling a fevered cheek. Hands giving love with no need to speak. Hands long, smooth, and skilled. Hands to answer what the mind has willed. Hands that give both poise and jest. Hands that still pass every test. Hands which only […]
The A Cappella Handyman: To Write
To Write To write is to grasp at the greatest of fantasies and to hold them firmly in the hand. To dream the greatest of dreams and to capture them in words. To seize upon the most illusive of thoughts, to harness them for a moment, and then in time, let them too run free. […]
Jeff Burkhart’s “Rhyme and Reason”: Must Be Love
I met someone And once again It hit me like A freight filled train It filled my heart And stabbed my brain I’m all mixed up And half insane My tears are falling Like the rain Into this flute Filled with champagne Be right or wrong I can’t abstain It must be love I feel […]
Poetry Corner: Johanna Ely “Serendipity”
We didn’t plan to leave town- thought the clouds might burn off in time, but then decided to drive south towards the band of light above the mountain. We drove as far as we could in thirty minutes, until we saw patches of blue sky and parked the car in a shopping center lot, in […]
Poetry Corner: James Garrett “Youth”
Callous as a youth. Often seen without a smile. It was ignorance, Not attitude, or style. No one to guide him. No one to help him see. Formed through moments, The man who came to be. Barriers formed in the mind, While growing older. Events and thoughts, Placed in a folder. Few ever learned, The […]
