Carquinez Village knows how to throw a house party. The local organization aimed at connecting and supporting seniors will be hosting Bay Area singing duo Paper Moon in the comfort of one of the Village member’s homes.
Paper Moon are a Vallejo duo consisting of guitarist Leo Cavanagh and violist Katrina Wreede who specialize in everything from American jazz standards, Brazilian choros, Argentine tangos, light classical arrangements and even some original tunes. Both are accomplished musicians with larges resumes to their names. Wreede has shared the stage with the likes of Smokey Robinson, John Denver, The Moody Blues, Barry White, Brian Wilson, Donna Summer, Natalie Cole, Josh Groban and Sarah Brightman. She also was a member of the Turtle Island String Quartet, a San Francisco group that has blended jazz, classical and rock music since 1985. Wreede was a violist for the group from 1990 to 1992, has been a professional symphony musician with numerous organizations and is currently a member of the Skyline String Ensemble, which performs at weddings and other special events to play everything from classical music to swing standards to contemporary pop.
Cavanagh composed music for three seasons at the Napa Valley Shakespeare Festival, was a soloist at three Healdsburg Guitar Festivals, lead groups at various California jazz festivals including the Vallejo Shoreline Jazz & Art Festival, and transcribed the music for the songbooks of bluegrass musician Peter Rowan and Michael Nesmith of the Monkees.
Together, Wreede and Cavanagh have performed at local venues such as the Jefferson Street Mansion and the Vallejo Naval & Historical Museum. Those wishing to get a further idea of Paper Moon’s sound can see them this Saturday for a special concert hosted by Carquinez Village.
Suzanne Antone, a spokesperson for Carquinez Village, said Paper Moon were chosen because of the diverse styles they perform.
“They have a wide range of music that would appeal to baby boomers,” she said. “Some of those tunes will send people down memory lane and then also have people get excited about how the music could affect the future.”
Antone said the event will give attendees a lot of chances to socialize, which is part of the Carquinez Village’s mission.
“The mission is about providing ways that senior citizens can stay independent by being interdependent on each other,” she said. “One of the constant variables for people living on their own is to have opportunities to socialize and to get chances to meet people different from their normal circles. This would be an opportunity for that.”
Overall, Antone thinks the event will be a good time for all who attend.
“It’s a beautiful location, great ambiance, friendly and outgoing audience engagement and fun music,” she said. “What else do you want to have for an evening out?”
The concert will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4 at 978 West K St. Since space is limited to 40 attendees, patrons must register in advance by calling 297-4272 or by signing up online at carquinezvillage.org. A $20 admission fee will be paid at the door.
Later in the month, Carquinez Village will be hosting its second annual “Wine and Light Bites” live and silent auction fundraiser at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17 at 144 East G St., the former location of the Benicia Public Library. For more information, visit carquinezvillage.org.
