Carbon dioxide emitted from railroad cars in Industrial Park; no danger reported

November 30, 2017 by George Johnston 1 Comment

A small volume of carbon dioxide leaked from two Union Pacific Railroad cars on Monday evening.
City officials first received 911 calls about the incident around 5 p.m. The Benicia Fire Department traveled to the vicinity of 200 East Industrial Way and found two rail cars used by welding supply store Praxair Distribution, Inc. were venting carbon dioxide (CO2). From there, a group consisting of the Fire Department, the Benicia Police Department, Solano County Environmental Health, Praxair and Union Pacific Railroad worked to resolve the issue. According to City officials, the CO2 release posed no danger to life, property or the environment.
The Benicia Fire, Solano County Environmental Health, Praxair, and Union Pacific personnel would monitor the event throughout the evening. A representative from Union Pacific Railroad confirmed the two rail cars involved belong to the company.
The cause of the release is still under investigation, officials said.
