The idea for the event emerged from a conversation between Terry Hughes of the gallery and the new commodore of the club, Christine Machado.
“She (Machado) and her husband have bought a few of my paintings,” said Hughes, a long-time member of the yacht club who has even painted the club itself. “She came to me and said, ‘Why don’t we have some kind of event, invite the public to the yacht club?’”
Plein Air Gallery artists will show 30 to 40 nautically themed works in the club’s large Regatta Room. Hughes said 11 of the 13 gallery artists whose works will be displayed will be at the event.
“We will have good representation. I asked each artist to bring at least five paintings. Some of them will bring three, and some will bring six,” he said. “If we can’t hang them all we might find easels for the larger pieces.
“It’s just a one-day event, which is tough because we have to set up all of our panels around the room to hang our paintings, and take them down at the end of the day.
“But it promises to be a lively event.”
And it’s free to the public, too.
