Staff Report
Following fact-finding proceedings that began Thursday evening and spilled into the early morning hours Friday, the Benicia Unified School District announced on its website that it had reached a mediated, tentative agreement with the Benicia Teachers Association.
In early 2018, BUSD and BTA held a series of meetings to discuss salaries for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years. After being unable to reach an agreement over raises, an impasse was declared. Teachers, students and parents voiced their disapproval at subsequent school board meetings, with some educators even providing lists of free services they would no longer offer to students outside of their contract hours unless an agreement was reached.
At the conclusion of a fact-finding hearing that met for several hours, an agreement was reached for the time being. The announcement was signed by BTA Bargaining Chair Barbara Jones and BUSD Bargaining Chair Dr. Khushwinder Gill. The exact terms and conditions of the agreement will be made public during the ratification processes for the BTA and BUSD.
