Bruins roll into playoffs with big win

November 5, 2016 by Steve Guertin Leave a Comment

The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High varsity football team rolled into the postseason with a convincing 34-7 victory over the visiting Swett Warriors on Friday.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Bruins, who finished the regular season 7-3 overall and 2-3 in the Tri-County Athletic League. Swett fell to 6-4 overall and 2-3 in the TCAL.

A 2-yard touchdown run by Marshel Martin gave the Bruins an early 6-0 lead, but Swett’s Te’vonta Johnson scored on an 11-yard run late in the second quarter and John Ellis Jr. kicked the extra point to give the Warriors a 7-6 lead at halftime.

It was all Bruins in the second half. Martin picked up a fumble and raced 60 yards for a touchdown to put SPSV in front for good. Martin added a 29-yard TD run later in the quarter and Akil Edwards scored on a 5-yard run for a 27-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Edwards added a 4-yard TD run early in the fourth to put Swett away.

Martin rushed for 140 yards and quarterback Michael Pappas completed 20-of-33 passes for 223 yards with two interceptions. Kailon Johnson-Loud had seven catches for the Bruins.

SPSV’s defense held the Warriors to only 61 yards rushing and 64 yards passing.

North Coast Section playoff seedings are expected to be released Sunday night.
