The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High boys varsity basketball team struggled against a big Half Moon Bay lineup last Saturday and lost to the Cougars, 51-45, in the MLK Invitational at Piedmont High School.
The Bruins (15-3) were playing without season scoring leader Tavian Henderson, who missed the game due to a family emergency. Half Moon Bay (17-0) used a 17-8 run in the second quarter to take command and held on in the second half.
“Half Moon Bay played really good defense and was really physical,” said SPSV head coach Derek Walker. “We weren’t able to get any transition baskets and couldn’t get into any kind of offensive flow.”
Part of the problem was Half Moon Bay’s size. The Cougars’ front line of 6-foot-7 power forward Case DuFrane and 6-6 center Austin Hilton dominated the inside while 6-4 point guard Tommy Nuno lit up SPSV’s defense.
“Their size really affected us,” Walker said. “They were so big and they knew our personnel really well. They’d been to three of our games and they had us well scouted. They executed their game plan to a tee and we didn’t.”
D.J. Harris led the Bruins with 14 points, a dozen coming in the second half. B.J. Standley added nine points and Marcus Oducado had six points.
The Bruins get back to Tri-County Athletic League action Tuesday night with a home game against Hercules.
