The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High varsity football team is still looking for its first win of the season after a 42-18 loss to the John Swett Indians at Dante Magnani Field on Friday.
The Bruins (0-4) had beaten the Indians (4-0) six straight times dating back to 2006, but Swett was in complete control in the first “Battle of the Straits” since 2011. Junior quarterback Matt Thompkins completed 9-of-14 passes for 211 yards and one touchdown and also added a rushing TD. Tight end Brandon Newman caught five passes for 125 yards and a touchdown.
Swett, off to one of its best starts in years, got off to a great start Friday with two touchdowns for a 16-0 lead. The Bruins tried to climb back in it, trimming the deficit to 16-12, but the Indians responded with 26 straight points.
Bruins running back Quentin Bozman rushed for 124 yards on 25 carries and scored SPSV’s first touchdown on a 7-yard run late in the opening quarter. A 4-yard TD run by Marquis Perrilliat later in the half pulled SPSV within 16-12.
But Swett coasted into the break with a 28-12 lead and Thompkins found Newman open for a 24-yard touchdown in the third quarter to increase the advantage. Swett’s Joe Ilaoa recovered a fumble in the end zone after a SPSV botched punt to put the game away.
The Bruins open Tri-County Athletic League play this coming Friday at home against Hercules.
JS-Newman 5-126, Devan Quesada 3-56, Hendricks 1-40. SP-Oducado 1-6, Gay 1-5, Smith 2-5, Chesney 1-6.
