Tavian Henderson scored 24 points as the St. Patrick-St. Vincent High boys varsity basketball team rolled past host St. Mary’s on Friday, 64-50.
It was the first victory at St. Mary’s in SPSV boys varsity history and set the Bruins up for a first-place battle with El Cerrito at the Bruins Lair this Tuesday night.
“Our boys had a chance to make history and they took advantage,” said Bruins head coach Derek Walker. “This was probably our most complete ballgame of the season. Everybody contributed. We came out focused, we executed and we competed.”
The Bruins opened the game with a 22-14 run and led by nine at halftime. St. Mary’s (14-6, 3-3 TCAL) never seriously threatened in the second half as Henderson and B.J. Standley always had an answer. Standley finished with 16 points and Henderson grabbed eight rebounds.
Marcus Oducado dished out seven assists and Danny Elizalde pulled eight rebounds for the Bruins (17-3, 5-1 TCAL).
“The boys are playing hard and are playing together,” Walker said. “They’re playing really good basketball right now.”
SPSV’s only league loss came at El Cerrito (17-2, 6-0 TCAL) on Jan. 8. The 69-43 defeat was SPSV’s worst loss of the season.
