Benicia Old Town Theatre Group (BOTTG) is known for its madcap comedies, and another one is coming this spring: Fred Carmichael’s “Coming Apart: A Romantic Comedy in Two Acts.” Auditions will be held in January.
The play is described as a romantic comedy, centered around married couple Colin and Frances Kittridge. Both are employed in the realm of writing— Colin as a humor columnist and Frances as a romance novelist— which gives them a sense of rivalry and puts their marriage on the rocks. The tone is immediately set at the start of the play, which opens with the two declaring in harmony, “I want a divorce!” Things do not get much better for the couple over the course of the play, as they have different recollections about how they met and how Colin proposed and each picture a different future. They confide in a pair of friends— Sylvia and Bert—, and the whole situation is paralleled in a book that Frances is writing titled “How to Survive a Marriage.” Do Colin and Frances survive their marriage? That is for the viewer to find out in April.
Auditions for BOTTG’s production will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16 and Wednesday, Jan. 17 at the Benicia Community Center, located at 370 East L St. Roles are being sought for two adult males and two adult females, who must come prepared with a two-minute female monologue. Callbacks will be held at the same time and place on Thursday, Jan. 18. The play will be performed from April 20 to May 12 at B.D.E.S. Hall, located at 140 West J St.
This production of “Coming Apart” will be directed by Angelina LaBarre, a theater instructor at Contra Costa College whose past works include “The Laramie Project” and “How We Got On.”
