The Benicia Old Town Theatre Group (BOTTG) is certainly in a humorous mood, if its latest run of shows is any indication. Last season saw the performances of “Having a Wonderful Time, Wish You Were Her” and “Coming Apart.” This streak will continue in the fall when the local theater puts on its third comedy in a row, “Social Security.”
The 1986 play— written by Andrew Bergman, the screenwriter behind such comedy classics as “Blazing Saddles,” “The In-Laws” and “Fletch”— focuses on a pair of married Manhattan art gallery owners, Barbara and David Kahn. One day, Barbara’s nerdy sister Trudy leaves their peculiar mother Sophie on their doorstep while Trudy and her husband Martin venture to Buffalo to prevent their college-aged daughter from having a three-way relationship with two men. In the midst of it, Barbara and David introduce Sophie to an elderly artist, and they become romantically involved.
“Social Security” will be performed at BDES Hall from Oct. 19 to Nov. 10. A director is still being sought, and open auditions are slated for early August. For more information, visit beniciaoldtowntheatregroup.com.
