Bonilla declared her candidacy Nov. 18. She quickly drew support not only from DeSaulnier, but also from Benicia’s representative in the House, Mike Thompson, D-Napa.
Bonilla announced Friday she’s also received the endorsement of the Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC), the state’s largest public safety officers’ association.
“Susan Bonilla is the clear choice for state Senate,” said Mike Durant, PORAC president.
“She has a proven record that we can count on to keep our communities safe and that is why she is the choice of over 67,000 rank-and-file public safety officers across the state.”
Other police and firefighter associations also have pledged to support Bonilla’s campaign, she said.
In announcing her candidacy, Bonilla, 54, said she hoped to continue to work for Contra Costa and Alameda county residents and business owners. She cited work that turned “a historic budget deficit into a balanced budget with a rainy day fund; revitalizing our economy through job creation and economic development; and reinvesting in our schools” as some of her contributions as an Assembly member.
She was elected to her third term Nov. 4, 2014.
“I will continue focusing on these efforts in the state Senate, building coalitions to deliver results for my constituents,” Bonilla said.
The special primary election, called because of DeSaulnier’s departure from the Senate, will take place March 17. The special election will take place May 19.
In the primary, Bonilla will face Democrat Joan Buchanan, 62, of Alamo, who is a former Assembly member. Term limits ended her time in the Assembly in 2008; prior to that, Buchanan spent 18 years on the San Ramon Valley Unified School District Board of Education, and was its president four times.
Republican Mark Meuser, a Walnut Creek attorney who was defeated by DeSaulnier in 2012, also is a candidate.
State Senate District 7 covers Concord, Livermore, Pleasanton, Walnut Creek, Danville, Pittsburg, Dublin and Brentwood, as well as other areas of Contra Costa and Alameda counties.
Special primary election sample ballots will be mailed Feb. 5. Voter registration deadline is March 2.
A Bay Area Commuter says
I don’t think Susan would be a good representative for her constiutients. When BART was on strike she stated that it inconvenienced the 400.00 rideres. She ignored the fact that it inconvenienced ALL the Bay Area Commuters. She failed to promote legislation making transit strikes illegal like the law in San Francisco and other metropolitan cities.
