The Board of Trustees for the Benicia Unified School District met earlier than usual Thursday night so members could attend various Back To School Night events.
The main item of business was a vote to add a seat to the District Curriculum Council, a request put to the board by Superintendent Janice Adams.
“The Council would very much like to have a board member as part of the council,” Adams said.
The DCC, comprised of teacher and administrative representatives from the district, is an advisory council that makes recommendations to the superintendent and board after researching and discussing issues and their potential impact on student achievement.
On Thursday the board mulled two possibilities: to have a designated board member on the DCC, or to have rotating members.
Trustee Dana Dean was concerned that DCC meetings are held during the day, and that some last all day. Because most of the board members work during the day, this would be a difficult commitment, she said.
“Being the only retired person here, I’ll volunteer,” board President Rosie Switzer said.
However, while the motion to add a board member to the DCC was unanimously approved, the question of who would serve the role was left open.
Adams also informed the board that three administrators from the high school, three from the middle school, and district office staff attended training on crisis preparedness. “This is the first of the three-day training,” she said. “We’re going in depth on how to prevent, prepare or respond to crises.”
