A two-alarm fire of undetermined origin damaged a home on the 1200 block of West K Street Saturday afternoon.
The family, who was at home at the time, escaped but reported a pet still is missing, Benicia fire Chief Jim Lydon said. The pet is a small dog, he said.
Investigation of the fire’s cause was expected to continue into Wednesday, Lydon said.
The fire was noticed about 5:40 p.m., and heavy smoke and flames were coming from the house when firefighting crews arrived.
Because the fire threatened neighboring homes on both sides, firefighters first deployed hoses to stop its spread and sounded a second alarm, Lydon said.
As firefighters fought the main blaze, they noticed it had caused extensive damage to both floors of the house.
In addition, a gazebo and a hot tub at one of the neighboring properties also had extensive damage, Lydon said.
The other neighbor’s house had windows that were cracked by the fire.
Besides Benicia Fire Department, other departments responding to the blaze were Vallejo, Fairfield and Contra Costa County, Lydon said.
Benicia Police Deparment directed traffic and Medic Ambulance was available, but no medical transportation was needed, he said.
Once the fire was extinguished, crews remained to make sure flames didn’t restart, Lydon said.
“The residents indicated that they were alerted to the fire by a sounding smoke detector and the smell of smoke,” Lydon said.
“They are currently staying with friends.”
There were no reported injuries, he said.
