Benicia High’s varsity volleyball team likes where it sits a third of the way through the Solano County Athletic Conference season.
The Lady Panthers wrapped up the first round of the SCAC schedule with a methodical 25-12, 25-16, 25-16 home victory over American Canyon. Benicia is now 13-0 overall this season and 5-0 in the SCAC, one game ahead of Vanden for first place.
The Lady Panthers have yet to lose so much as a set in conference play and are wondering if winning every set through a 15-match SCAC schedule is a realistic goal.
“I’d be lying if I said we weren’t thinking about it,” said Benicia head coach Jamie Hadenfeldt. “It’s kind of an unspoken mission. They were excited to complete the first round without losing a set. I think if someone is going to win a set from us, they’ll really have to earn it.”
Benicia toyed with the Lady Wolves (9-10, 3-2 SCAC) for most of the evening. Megan Osterholt paced Benicia’s offense with seven kills and four aces. Lana Gore, Jessica Blakeman, Kellie Sluga and Cassidy Jannson each had five kills, with Jannson adding four aces and seven digs.
Eden Fukushima continues to splendidly quarterback Benicia’s offense and had 24 assists, four aces and five digs. Charlotte Cannizzaro added three blocks.
The Lady Panthers look to keep their momentum going when they play at Vallejo on Thursday.
“We’re at a point in our season where the girls really have to balance school and their energy and all that, and they’ve been working really hard to stay strong and consistent,” Hadenfeldt said.
