Spring Break was not kind to Benicia High’s boys tennis team.
The Panthers entered Spring Break last Monday with an outside shot at a Solano County Athletic Conference championship – or at least a berth into the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs. But with their top six players away on vacation during the break, the Panthers ended up with neither.
Benicia’s regular season ended with a 9-0 loss to Vanden on Thursday. It was the sixth straight defeat for the Panthers, who were 7-2 two weeks ago but finished 7-8 and fourth in the SCAC. Only the top three SCAC teams qualified for the Section playoffs, and Bethel (9-6) took third away from the Panthers with a pair of 7-2 victories last week.
American Canyon and Vanden tied for the SCAC co-championship, each team finishing 13-2. American Canyon, however, won the season series with the Vikings, 2-1.
Benicia now sets its sights on the SCAC Tournament, which begins April 29 at the Millennium Club in Vacaville.
