Pitchers Danielle Kranz and Brianna Schlattman combined on a one-hit shutout as Benicia High’s varsity softball team beat host Bethel on Wednesday, 7-0.
It was the 38th straight Solano County Athletic Conference victory for the Lady Panthers dating back to the 2012 season. Benicia is now 10-0 in the SCAC this year and 12-4 overall.
Kranz pitched the first four innings Wednesday to get the win. The senior retired the first 10 batters she faced until Bethel’s Janessa Obenchain lined a single to left in the fourth inning. Of the 12 outs Kranz recorded, 11 came by strikeout. Schlattman was just as effective, retiring all nine batters she faced to get the save.
Benicia’s offense scored five times in the top of the first inning. Alex Wardlow got things started with a single, stole second and went to third on an error. Chanler Powell reached on an error that scored Wardlow and Kranz followed with a single. Shelby Thompson made it 2-0 with an RBI double to left, and Mallory Barnard stroked an RBI double to bring home another run. A sacrifice fly by Schlattman, a single by Alana Combes and a double by Taylor Bloch added to the carnage.
The Lady Panthers added a couple of insurance runs in the third. Barnard reached safely to start the inning on a dropped fly ball and ended up scoring on a Schlattman single. Bloch brought home another run with a fly ball.
Benicia hosts Fairfield on Friday.
