Two first-half goals were all host Vanden needed for a 2-0 victory over the Benicia High boys varsity soccer team Monday night in Fairfield.
Eddie Torres gave Vanden (2-0 SCAC) the lead 20 minutes into the game when he headed in a corner kick from Brandon Gajeski. Gabe Zepeda took a cross from Ty Phillips 11 minutes later and made it 2-0.
It was the third straight loss for Benicia (1-3), which fell to to 0-2 in the Solano County Athletic Conference. Benicia is still looking for its first conference goal.
“The days of Benicia just stepping on the field and being the dominant team is over,” said Benicia head coach Javier Martinez. “We have to work hard and create our own opportunities, and we’re not doing that. We have to turn the ship around.
“We just can’t create. Our first touch is horrible and our defending is not where it needs to be. We’re just too young and we don’t have the experience that we need. Our seniors need to come out of the shell that they’re in. Right now we don’t have anybody stepping up and taking that leadership role.”
Benicia hosts Fairfield tonight at Drolette Stadium.
