Benicia High’s girls varsity soccer team wrapped up another Solano County Athletic Conference championship with a 5-0 victory over Vallejo at Corbus Field last Thursday.
It was the seventh straight SCAC championship for the Lady Panthers, who have gone 46 straight conference games without a loss. Benicia’s last SCAC defeat came at Rodriguez, 2-1, on April 20, 2011. The Lady Panthers have gone 91-3-5 in SCAC competition since the beginning of the 2008 season.
“It feels good to clinch it,” said Benicia first-year head coach Javier Martinez. “I don’t think the girls even realized it because we were just concentrating on getting through the week because of Spring Break. We had a lot of players missing.”
Katie Lovelace and Izzy Reyes each had two goals against Vallejo while Michelle Li notched three assists. Benicia also scored on an own-goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Maddison Goodmiller played all 80 minutes for the Lady Panthers and helped record the team’s 12th shutout in 15 games. Seniors Jenna Rogenski and Emily Wolfe, junior Megan Klein and sophomore Eli Lopez have anchored a defensive line that has allowed only five goals all season – two in SCAC play.
“We have a lot of experienced players back there on defense and they understand what to do in certain situations,” Martinez said. “They’ve been very consistent and they often ignite our offense.”
Benicia has dominated Vallejo over the past seven seasons, winning 20 straight meetings while outscoring the Lady Apaches, 133-1.
The Lady Panthers (12-1-2, 12-0 SCAC) celebrate Senior Night this Tuesday at home against Fairfield. Benicia will take the SCAC’s No. 1 seed into the Section playoffs, which begin May 6.
