Benicia High’s girls golf team took over sole possession of first place in the Solano County Athletic Conference with a 256-299 victory over American Canyon at Chardonnay on Tuesday.
Benicia’s Sofia Young birdied the par-5 seventh hole and finished with a 1-over-par 37 to take medalist honors. Freshman teammate Angel Antonio had the day’s second-best round with a 45.
The Lady Panthers improved to 3-0 in the SCAC and have now beaten everyone in the conference through the schedule’s first round robin. American Canyon fell to 1-2.
“We’ve seen everyone now and we know what we’re up against,” said Benicia head coach Allan Frederick.
Jordan Whiting birdied the par-3 eighth hole and finished with a 55 for Benicia, which came 12 strokes away from breaking their team record at Chardonnay. Naomi Kenney also shot a 55 and Erika Johnson rounded out Benicia’s scorecard with a 64.
American Canyon’s two best scores were a 58 and a 60.
Benicia takes on Bethel on Thursday at the Blue Rock Springs West Course.
