Benicia High’s Sofia Young struggled at times during last Monday’s Northern California Girls Golf Regional Championships and finished tied for 38th out of 88 golfers competing at The Club at Crazy Horse Ranch in Salinas.
Young, the first Benicia High golfer ever to make it as far as the NorCal Championships, sunk a long birdie putt on the fourth hole but went on to shoot five bogies, one double-bogey and one triple-bogie on her way to a 10-over-par 82.
“She was only 1-over after six holes when I posted her score online and I think I jinxed her,” said Benicia golf coach Allan Frederick. “She made it to NorCals for the first time, which was a huge accomplishment, but I know she was really disappointed with her round.”
Young, the only Lady Panther still competing in the postseason, needed to shoot a 77 to advance to the CIF State Championships next Tuesday at Red Hill Country Club in Rancho Cucamonga. Yealimi Noh of Carondelet shot a 1-over 73 and won on the individual NorCal title on a tiebreaker. Jessica Luo of Lynbrook and Ty Akabane of San Ramon Valley also shot a 73. St. Francis of Mountain View won the NorCal team event.
