Benicia amateur golfer Kathleen Scavo made it through the first two days of the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championships before getting eliminated Wednesday in the match play Round of 64 at the Forest Highlands Golf Club’s Meadow Course in Flagstaff, Ariz.
Scavo, 16, who lives in Benicia but is a senior at Justin-Siena High School in Napa, lost 3 and 2 to Binny Lee of Frisco, Tex., in the first round of match play. Lee advances to the Round of 32.
Scavo reached the match play round after shooting a 73 on Monday and a 3-under-par 69 on Tuesday in singles play. Her total score of 142 tied for fourth overall out of 154 golfers. Lee finished 57th with a 150.
Scavo shot par on every hole in the first round except for a lone bogey on No. 10, then birdied the 4th, 10th and 14th holes in the second round to finish 2-under overall. Angel Yin of Arcadia won the singles play portion of the tournament with a scorching 131.
Lee and Scavo were all square through the first five holes of match play Wednesday until Scavo bogeyed the sixth hole and Lee birdied 9 and 10 to go 3-up. Scavo closed to within one hole but bogeyed the final two holes.
