Benicia residents appreciate local essential workers with signs and artwork

Benicia residents are helping support essential workers with signs and artwork.

BENICIA – While some Benicians are able to shelter-in-place or work from home, there are many essential workers that are on the front lines everyday to keep society functioning while providing critical services to residents during the Covid-19 crisis.

A group of thankful Benicians organized a Facebook page titled, “Benicia Appreciates All Our Essential Workers Group,” which has already grown to over 120 members in just a week.

Benicians are drawing or cutting out simple hearts with a “B” for Benicia in the middle and posting them in front windows, on the door or anywhere that passersby can easily see them. Some residents are creating banners, lawn signs, fence signs and other things around the house to show their appreciation for essential workers.

“Benicians around town are sharing a little friendship and love for our neighbors,” said one of the page’s organizers David Batchelor.

Residents are encouraged to share pictures of their drawn hearts or ones seen on the page. Putting a “B” in the middle creates a personalized “Thank You” message of gratitude to local service providers who put themselves at risk to help keep everyone safe.

“Some folks can’t leave home and may find your posts comforting,” one of the page’s posts reads.

The message means a lot to those we all count on – health care workers, police, fire, City personnel and services, garbage, postal employees, restaurant staffs, grocery store teams, farm workforce, delivery drivers and warehouse workers–anyone putting their health at risk  to help keep families safe, nourished and our homes operating.

“Without ALL of them, our community would have collapsed,” the post reads.

Artwork and creativity can be used to make beautiful pieces to appreciate essential workers.

The group recommends making hand-made lawn signs with the following message:

Thank You To Our

Essential Service Workers

Benicia Appreciates You!

The group has a limited supply of lawn signs that have been donated by Mayor Elizabeth Patterson and many councilmembers for your use. The page is organized by David and Annette Batchelor, Terry and Randi Scott, Councilmember Lionel Largaespada and artwork provided by Kerry Lee.

“Let’s give these folks the recognition they deserve,” it reads. “Put a smile on their face. Let them know we care and appreciate their commitment to helping all of us have a fairly regular life while they risk theirs.”
