Sister City Association Emissary Lic. Octavio Magaña of Tula, Mexico stopped into Benicia recently to share news of the town’s sister city’s recent induction of its new Mayor, Lic. Ismael Gadoth Tapia. The new mayor began his official term of office in Tula on Friday, Aug. 19.
Magaña was planning a visit to the Bay Area last week to visit family and was asked by Tula’s new mayor to visit Benicia while he was here, to share Tula’s special news with its Sister City and Benicia Mayor Elizabeth Patterson. Magaña presented Mayor Patterson with a copy of a recently-produced memory album commemorating the two cities’ relationship, and a model of an Atlantis statue from the ancient Toltec ruins in Tula.
Benicia’s Sister City program began in 1979 when Benicia Rotarians Former President Phil Goettel and then-Benicia Mayor Warren O’Blennis first discussed the feasibility of a Sister City program for Benicia. Shortly after World War II, plans were first forged for an organization of sister cities worldwide, designed to promote friendship and international understanding.
