This year’s annual Benicia High School Advanced Dance Show, titled “Slumber Party,” is scheduled for three shows on May 30, 31 and June 1 at the Hayley Horn Auditorium on campus. This event is not only a great medium for students to showcase their dancing skills, but it also helps provide funding for the dance program.
“The dance program at BHS accepts donations year round, but participates in fundraising events twice a year in order to allow every student the opportunity to participate,” said BHS dance teacher Samantha Sanchez, who also directed this year’s show. “The program is made up of a beginning, intermediate and advanced class.”
This year’s theme is about four high school girls at a sleepover deciding which movie to watch. Each dance represents a “preview” of the movie. A description on the school’s website is as follows: “Friends! Films! Fun! Four friends reunite for movie night – with so many options, how can they choose?”
Each year, Ms. Sanchez and the advanced dance class collaborate at the beginning of the year to brainstorm ideas for theme of the show.
“We knew we wanted to do a movie theme, but wanted to develop a show which had a story to go along with it, said Sanchez. “Each student has an opportunity to choreograph if they want to. Some students have a chance to choreograph multiple pieces.”
All dancers are in multiple numbers and the class is made up of 27 students. There are 19 dances in the show.
“Drama students who are a part of the drama program will be acting in the show between each dance number,” she said.
Tickets for the show are $10 for students and $15 for general admission. Doors open at 7 p.m. at 1101 Military West in Benicia.
