SAVE MART SUPERMARKETS has signed a multiple-year agreement that extends its co-sponsorship of the annual NASCAR Sprint Cup series race at Sonoma Raceway, track President Steve Page and Save Mart Co-president Nicole Pesco announced.
The company, which has 16,000 employees, operates 217 stores under the brands Save Mart, Lucky, FoodMaxx, S-Mart Foods and Maxx Value Foods; and two distribution centers, Smart Refrigerated Transport and Yosemite Wholesale Warehouse. It is a voting partner in Super Store Industries and owner of a distribution center in Lathrop, Mid Valley Dairy in Fairfield and Sunnyside Farms ice cream plant in Turlock.
The track has installed a granite monument to the late Bob Piccinini, Save Mart’s former chairperson and CEO, at the corner of Turn 11’s lawn, which has been renamed Piccinini Plaza.
The company debuted a new fan display during last weekend’s Toyota-Save Mart 350 activities. The Save Marty/Lucky Breaking Zone is a social media place where race fans can charge cell phones, participate in question-answer sessions with drivers, hear music and meet NASCAR personalities.
Save Mart began as the title sponsor of the NASCAR Cup event in 1992. It has been co-sponsor of the event with various partners since 1998, and the race has been called the Toyota-Save Mart 350 since 2007.
Kyle Busch, who returned to racing in May after a serious pre-Cup accident in February, won this year’s Toyota-Save Mart 350 Sunday afternoon. Jeff Gordon, the Vallejo native who is a five-time winner of the race and who made his last appearance as a full-time driver in the contest, finished 16th.
