BENICIA’S RELLIK TAVERN, 726 First St., is entered in a national food contest, and is encouraging its patrons to vote online in support of Chef Scott Akkerman’s “Raven’s Claw” recipe.
Owner Delando Pegan inspired the recipe because his two favorite foods are shrimp and jalapeño peppers. Akkerman combined them into a single recipe, and it became the tavern’s best seller. The dish is called “Raven’s Claw,” combining the tavern’s raven mascot with the dish’s resemblance to a claw.
The dish has been entered in the online 2013 Next Top Food Product contest of U.S. Foods, a national food service distributor to restaurants and other industries that serve food.
Supporters may vote online once a day at www.usfoods.com/ntp. The Rellik’s entry is among those listed in the West region.
Six Flags Discovery Kingdom announces year-round hours
For the first time in 16 years, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom will be open all year long starting in 2014, including holidays and weekends in January and February.
In addition, it will open a new family water attraction, Tsunami Soaker, in spring.
The park has traditionally closed in early January, after its Holiday in the Park celebration, and reopened prior to Spring Break.
“With the region’s mild temperatures, being open all year means guests have even more opportunity to enjoy Discovery Kingdom’s wildlife and wilder rides,” said Don McCoy, park president.
The Tsunami Soaker is an interactive family water ride that arms passengers with giant water pistols for battles that leaves participants and bystanders soaked. The ride will have nine boats that can carry up to six passengers each.
Season passes and annual memberships are on sale through the website www.sixflags.com/discoverykingdom. The park is at 1001 Fairground Drive Vallejo.
