IT STARTED OUT LIKE ANY OTHER DAY at Dr. Barry Parish’s Benicia Family Dentistry, 325 First St. But the staff was in for a big surprise when KUIC 95.3 FM showed up.
Staff member Jamie Rippey had entered a contest offered by the station, and she won her office the “Ultimate Coffee Break,” sponsored by Vacaville Buick GMC.
The station brought not only coffee and pastries, served to Benicia Family Dentistry staff and patients, but also their equipment so DJ Barbara Hoover could broadcast her morning show from the downtown dental office.
“(Hoover) called in and talked to us over the air,” Benicia Family Dentistry staff member Janet Slight said. Slight said Hoover was “joking around” with the staff and interviewed contest winner Rippey on-air. Hoover and Rippey also “talked about dentistry and demonstrated special dental equipment that detects cavities.”
KUIC certainly fulfilled its promise to spice up the workday, Slight said. “It was a very fun half hour.”
Parsons Gallery plans September show
At one time in its three years in the Tannery Building, 131 First St., Bill Parsons Art Gallery was one of a few remaining tenants.
Now the artist has lots of neighbors — antique shops, a pub with an outdoor patio, a small restaurant and other businesses.
Not only is the Tannery bustling, so is the art gallery.
“The gallery is thriving, and Bill is so busy this year,” said Mike Caitham, a spokesman for the artist. “He is receiving lots of commissioned work.”
Specifically, Parsons has been receiving requests for his local paintings and portraits. He paints scenes from throughout the state, from landscapes to still-life to equine depictions and portraits. Many of his commissions are for Benicia scenes and portraits.
His gallery contains more than Parsons’s own art. Visitors can see the works of Charles H. White, John Trtek, Gary Bergren and Roberto Zamora; one section is devoted to the paintings and portraits of Parsons’s students.
Prospective painters may take classes with Parsons on Wednesdays, Thursdays and weekends.
The Bill Parsons Art Gallery also will have an open show Sept. 7-8.
