CULLEN’S TANNERY PUB AND SALOON, 131 First St., which participated in Saturday’s Benicia Main Street Beer Crawl, will have a tasting at 6-9 p.m. Tuesday of Knappogue Whiskey, owner Denise Cullen said.
“We work hard to remain true to our Irish roots,” she said.
The saloon celebrated Valentine’s Day with Four Roses Bourbon and chocolate, and Cullen said that event was such a success, the staff decided to enhance its St. Patrick’s Day celebration by adding two Irish beers on tap for the beer crawl tasting Saturday afternoon. Their selections were Smithwick’s and Harp, which Cullen called “an authentic Irish pairing.”
Cost of Tuesday night’s tasting is $10 for whiskey and $3 for beer. Message line for the pub is 707-637-5300.
MCE seeks administrative assistant
Marin Clean Energy, which will become the primary electricity purchaser for Benicia customers in May, is looking for an administrative assistant.
Based in San Rafael, MCE is a community choice aggregation agency that purchases 50 percent to 100 percent of its customers’ power from renewable sources.
Benicia will convert from Pacific Gas and Electric as its primary power utility provider, but PG&E will continue to manage transmission, distribution and billing.
The administrative assistant would be supervised by MCE’s internal operations coordinator, and would provide clerical and basic administrative-level duties, such as reception and phone answering, meeting coordination, supply maintenance, records management and other assigned duties.
The person would work in collaboration with MCE teams to make sure office operations, meeting coordination, customer service, document management and accounts payable run smoothly.
The administrative assistant would handle vendors and contractors for MCE teams, process and track invoices, resolve invoicing and billing problems, maintain and organize files, handle meeting room and equipment reservations, provide refreshments, schedule conference calls, provide visitors with direction and parking information, be in charge of staff events and help with conference registration and logistics.
The person also would deal with building managers, insurers and consultants. Other duties involve regular office management, customer service and mail distribution.
Candidates need at least an associate’s degree and two years of experience as an administrative support professional, with knowledge of standard computer programs such as Microsoft Office Suite, accounting and financial analysis.
The full-time position would pay from $40,000 to $52,000. Benefits include paid vacation, sick, personal and parental leave; employer-paid medical, dental, vision, life and long-term disability insurance; employer contribution to a 401(k) retirement plan; optional flexible spending account and commute alternatives program.
Deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Friday. Resumes may be emailed to jobs@mceCleanEnergy.org.
Siren Fish Company delivers in Benicia
Siren Fish Company, a community-supported fishery that distributes sustainably caught fish from Bodega Bay and Fort Bragg, has been distributing its products in Benicia, founder Anna Larsen said.
She said her company’s seafood is delivered within 48 hours of the fish leaving the water.
“We are thrilled to be bringing our delicious fresh seafood to Benicia,” Larsen said. “We have been delivering to downtown Benicia for the last year and have been very impressed by the support for sustainable food. I believe that we are the first business of our kind to serve the area.”
She said her company goes “out of our way to support small fishing operations and encourage hook and line fishing. We also include recipes, preparation instructions and source information with each and every share. We make sure our customers successfully prepare their fish.”
Customers can buy seafood by the pound, order freezer packs or join Siren’s Community Sustainable Fishery (CSF) organization, through which a customer can pay for four, eight or 12 weeks of fish delivery at a time. CSF participants need to bring a small cooler in which to carry their bagged fish. Recipes are emailed to subscribers.
The Benicia delivery day is from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesdays at Essence of Life Healing Studio. Those interested may email info@sirenfish.com or call 707-925-FISH.
New staff member, renovations at North Capital’s Benicia branch
Certified financial planner Frances Harkins and registered paraplanner Danyell Bjornstad have announced the addition of Kerry Rivers to the Benicia branch of North Capital Inc.
Rivers is a planner associate and part of an all-women team, the two said.
She is a life-long Benician who attended Little Red Schoolhouse, a preschool that once occupied the company’s building, 602 West K St.
Among Rivers’s other ties to the site, she had her Benicia High School senior portrait taken there. Now it is part of her professional career.
She has attended the University of California-Santa Cruz and spent one semester at the University of Leeds, in Great Britain, before being awarded a bachelor of arts degree in environmental studies in 2011.
Rivers also has a background in both analytical writing and customer service.
She is a volunteer member on a communication committee for the nonprofit environmental organization Sustainable Contra Costa.
In addition to adding to its staff, North Capital is undergoing renovations to its Benicia office. The work will be finished soon, Harkins and Bjornstad said.
The improvements are expected to enhance the appearance as well as the functions of the building, they said. George Schandelmier Jr. Landscaping has finished its drought-tolerant landscaping that is based on master gardener Libbey McKendry’s design, they said. They both are from Benicia as well, Harkins and Bjornstad said.
The building also has new signage, made by longtime Benicia signmaker Larry Pinero. Harkins and Bjornstad said the new signs carry the words “Capital Corner,” with references to the 1950s, when the building housed the Old Corner Grocery, as well as a reminder that Benicia briefly was California’s capital city.

Coconut’s Fish Cafe seeks to expand into Solano County
Coconut’s Fish Cafe, known for its fish tacos, is looking to expand into Solano County, and possibly Benicia, spokesperson Rosie Gillam said.
“The brand is targeting tight-knit communities throughout Benicia and surrounding communities to open new locations,” she said.
The company, which opened in 2009, has its headquarters in Maui, Hawai’i, and it has corporate and franchise sites throughout the country, Gillam said. Currently it is growing its presence in the Southwest, she said, and is reviewing franchisee applications.
“The tropical fast-casual concept is centered on quality and sustainability,” she said. “To prevent over-fishing, Coconut’s Fish Cafe only uses fresh, wild-caught fish, which it prepares with traditional Hawaiian ingredients such as mango and wasabi.”
Frances Oney is in charge of franchise development for the company. Those interested may visit the company’s website, www.coconutsfishcafe.com.
