The Olate Dogs, a troupe of performing poodle-mix rescue animals who once won the hearts of judges – and the million dollar prize – on the competition television series “America’s Got Talent,” will be stopping in to entertain audiences at the Empress Theatre in Vallejo Saturday.
Led by Richard Olate and his son Nicholas, the act travels around the world raising awareness for animal rescue organizations. The talented pups make up a high-energy, fast-paced theatrical act. See them flip, twirl, slide, jump rope – and fall into a conga line in perfect sync.
The Olate family story is a rags-to-riches tale. A third-generation circus performer since the age of 12, family patriarch Richard grew up in South America, where he began rescuing stray dogs from the street and training them to perform. Olate came to the United States at age 33 and created a variety show with his family and the trained pooches, going on to perform hundreds of acts on nationwide tours.
Now based in Dallas, the Olate family continues to rescue dogs and train them to become part of their professional troupe. The Olate Dogs will donate a portion of the proceeds from Saturday’s show to the Humane Society of the North Bay.
The Olate Dogs will be at the Empress Theatre, 330 Virginia St., Vallejo Saturday, Dec. 17 at 2 p.m. Reserved seats are $20 to $75 and can be purchased online at empresstheatre.org, by calling the box office at 552-2400, or at the door beginning one hour before the performance. The Empress offers a $10 discount off any ticket for children age 12 and under.
