Rich Reza pitched a complete game and added two hits at the plate to lead the Benicia Oldtimers past San Leandro, 9-3, last Sunday at Fitzgerald Field.
It was the eighth win in the past 10 games for the Oldtimers, who improved to 14-6 overall this season.
San Leandro scored in the opening inning thanks to an error, a stolen base and a passed ball, but Benicia responded with seven runs in the bottom of the second. Bruce Zimmer led off with a double and scored on a Reza double. Lou Kosta followed with his own double to score Reza, and Kosta ended up scoring thanks to a Mark Mortensen single and an RBI fielder’s choice by Jimmy Ferrucci. A two-out, two-run double by Darren Wheat capped the inning.
San Leandro pushed a run across in the fourth inning on a walk, balk and a single, and also scored a run in the eighth off three singles. Benicia added two runs in the bottom of the eighth on hits from Eric Wheat, Jarrod Sproul, Brian Rowles and Reza.
Reza allowed only six hits and struck out eight. Eric Wheat went 4-for-4 while Mortensen and Zimmer each had two hits.
Benicia hosts Fairfield this Sunday at noon.
