Benicia High’s boys wrestling team had seven different grapplers finish seventh or better at least weekend’s Tim Brown Invitational at Foothill High in Sacramento.
Christian Ramos had the best finish for Benicia, taking second place at 116 pounds. Mason Boutain (141) took third place, Fernando Lanza (135) took fourth place and Joseph Hurst (155) finished sixth. Ryley Boutain (110), Lysander Mahilum (123) and Tyler Kay (173) each took seventh place.
Benicia as a team finished in fourth place with 158.5 points. Buchanan High won the team tournament with 217.5 points.
Benicia’s female wrestlers took part in the Julie Gonzalez Wrestling Tournament at Vallejo High School. Shelly Avelino went 5-0 in the 133-pound division and won the championship. Ricki Liang also went unbeaten at 123 pounds to win the title, and teammate Tara Othman went 3-1 and took third place at 118 pounds.
Benicia’s varsity wrestlers get back to Solano County Athletic Conference competition this Wednesday at home against Fairfield.
