The department began receiving calls about the fire about 9 a.m., including one from the home’s occupant, Lydon said. Trucks from both Benicia and Vallejo fire departments were dispatched, and before they arrived firefighters could see a large column of smoke coming from the home, he said.
Once at the home, they saw the smoke was heavy in every area of the house, with flames visible through a first-floor window.
Firefighters confined the fire to the first-floor bedroom, where the fire is believed to have started, and had the blaze under control by 9:25 a.m., Lydon said.
“We had an early report that all occupants were out of the residence,” Lydon said. “We were then advised that there were five dogs in the residence.”
Firefighters found and removed the dogs, he said, “however, all but one did not survive.”
He said the fire’s heat and smoke damaged the home. Except for the dogs, no one else was harmed by the fire, he said.
A woman who had been in the house said she was sleeping on the second floor when the fire started. She woke up and smelled smoke, he said.
When she went downstairs and saw the fire, she left the house, he said. The home had no smoke detectors, the woman told firefighters.
Those living in the house were displaced, and began making temporary arrangements for housing through their insurance company, Lydon said.
Cause of the fire has not been released, and the department’s investigation of the incident is continuing, Lydon said.

Very interested in cause of fire. An electrician found too many wires in two outlets in our living room, which is several houses down the street.
