The halls of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church will be filled with the sounds of three incredible acoustic guitarists for an intimate concert benefiting a good cause. Chris Yeaton, Antonio Calogero and Adam Werner will bring their distinctive styles to the historic church Saturday, July 22 with a portion of proceeds benefiting the St. Paul’s Community Meal.
Debi Hall, a coordinator for the Community Meal program, said the church has been doing fundraising concerts in some form for at least the last decade. Some years have had as many as three or four concerts while others have been a little more sparse, but they all have had the same goal: to raise money for the long-running program.
“When we find a musician that wants to come and is willing to give up some of the proceeds or make it a complete fundraiser for the community meal, we will certainly take them up on that,” Hall said.
Since 1998, St. Paul’s has hosted its Feed the Hungry Community meal program to provide free hot and healthy meals to anyone who enters the church’s doors between 4:30 and 6 p.m. every Wednesday. According to Hall, nobody gets turned away.
“We never ask any questions,” she said.
Hall said that funding for the program comes mostly through donations.
“We do get some help from the food banks and Community Action Council, but we pretty much rely on donations and we will continue to do it as long as we can,” she said.
Hall estimates that 125 to 150 people are served each Wednesday.
“It’s a great neighborhood outreach, and we’re glad to be able to do it,” she said.
To help raise money for the program, some of the proceeds from the July 22 concert will go toward the Community Meal. In addition to supporting the program, patrons will also be able to enjoy great music. Hawaiian slack key guitarist Yeaton— whose mother lives in Benicia—and slap ’n’ tap guitarist Werner have performed at St. Paul’s with other musicians.
“They always put on a fun, lively concert and we always have a great turnout especially because (Chris) has friends in the area and people come from all over to see him and Adam,” Hall said.
This time, Yeaton and Werner will be bringing Antonio Calogero, an Italian-born finger style guitarist who received his degree in classical guitar from the Santa Cecilia Conservatory of Music in Rome. He relocated to San Francisco in 1995, has performed all over North America, and has been featured on the National Public Radio program “Echoes” and in the pages of Acoustic Guitar magazine.
Werner is a Los Angeles-based guitarist who blends elements of new age, contemporary folk and world music into a style all his own. He also has been featured on “Echoes” and recently received the honor of “Best Musician” in the 2017 Best of Woodland Hills Awards from the Woodland Hills Award Program.
Yeaton lives in Hawaii and was the founder of the Woodsong Acoustic Group concert series, which consists of Hawaiian slack key guitarists who perform with musically skilled audience members. Yeaton grew up in Walnut Creek, but with connections in Benicia, he has frequently performed in the area, including at St. Paul’s.
Hall believes the combination of all three performers will make for an enjoyable evening of “great music with three different musicians playing.”
“It’s just fun and happy and lively,” she said. “They don’t play an hour and get up and walk away. They’re all gonna play, they’ll play separately and together.”
Hall said there will also be an opportunity after the concert for people to meet the performers and purchase their CDs.
The concert will begin at 7 p.m., Saturday, July 22 at St. Paul’s Church, located at 120 East J St. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 at the door and $20 in advance. Those wishing to purchase tickets may talk to Parish Administrator JoAnn Souza at the St. Paul’s office, which is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.
